City Council Member Keith Hartzell is preparing to launch a campaign to challenge Mayor Jay Gillian in the upcoming 2026 Ocean City, NJ Mayoral Race. In 2022, Gillian beat Hartzell 2,348 to 1,953, winning by a total of 395 votes.
More recently, Keith Hartzell has made headlines as a leading voice on City Council opposing the 252-room ICONA Resort at the former Wonderland Pier site. Gillian has focused on new city investments, such as the new police substation and ongoing boardwalk renovations.

The upcoming election takes place during a difficult time for Mayor Jay Gillian, who has served as Mayor since first winning office in 2010. In recent months, Gillian has declared personal bankruptcy and drawn public criticism following the closure of his family-owned business.
Election Day is on May 12, 2026, and challengers have until February 26th to file petitions to appear on ballot. Hartzell is expected to file his petition within the coming weeks.
