On Monday, July 28th, Bill Merritt and another activist from the group “Ocean City 2050” installed rotating laser lights to reflect off of the Ferris Wheel. The activist group, recently established, advocates against Icona’s plan for a mega-hotel at the old amusement site.

Bill Meritt originally proposed his plan at the July 17th City Council meeting, trying to round up support from members of council. While the council did not comment on his proposal, Developer Eustace Mita allowed Meritt to move forward with his idea.

Bill Meritt isn’t using the original lights for the Ferris Wheel, as they’re out-of-service. Eustace Mita said the display would cost $700,000. If operational, those original lights would be able to be programmed to showcase different images like pumpkins on Halloween.

Meritt’s installation uses four wooden 2-by-6ft boards with mounted lasers that will reflect off of the Ferris Wheel. While not as strong as the original bright lights, the display can be seen from nearby locations.
