On Wednesday, January 7th, the Ocean City Planning Board voted 4-4, stalling a recommendation regarding the rehabilitation designation for the Wonderland Pier property. This was the last notable development in the ongoing Wonderland Pier debacle.

More than 18 months have passed since Wonderland Pier closed its doors, yet City Council has failed to produce a clear solution, even as four current council members run in the upcoming municipal election.

As the community enters a second season without the landmark, local business owners say the absence of a north end anchor has reduced foot traffic and strained nearby businesses. Rather than working toward a practical resolution, council has allowed infighting and political calculation to define the issue, leaving the broader community and local tourism economy to pay the price.

In response to the ongoing controversy, City Council formed a boardwalk subcommittee made up of both council members and community leaders to examine the issue and provide updates. While the subcommittee represents a constructive and important step toward a solution, it’s important to remember City Council is not bound to follow their recommendations, which could lead to further inaction.
