Ocean City, NJ Mayor Jay Gillian is vowing for additional electric bicycle safety after nearly colliding with two riders recently.
OCNJ Mayor Jay Gillian said in a release, “Just a few days ago, two young e-bike riders riding on the wrong side of the road flew through a red light and into the path of my vehicle. Only the grace of God saved their lives..”

Many of these electric bikes can reach speeds of 20 MPH+
Gillian said he has written to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy regarding amendments to laws that govern e-bikes regarding safety. The Governor’s office assured him the matter is under discussion.
Locally, the mayor has vowed additional safety precautions, including presentations and police monitoring bike paths. During the school year, there are several assemblies scheduled to address topics including e-bike safety at both the Ocean City Intermediate School & High School.
Mayor Jay Gillian said the near-miss “shoot me to my core” and this is a situation that plays out daily throughout the island and state.
This incident comes just weeks after a 14-year-old rider from EHT lost his life in a collision that took place minutes from Ocean City in Somers Point.
