On the evening of October 10th, 2024, OCNJ was treated to a rare and mesmerizing sight: the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky!

COOL, BUT WHY?: The Northern Lights appeared over OCNJ due to a severe solar storm that hit Earth, causing a geomagnetic storm. This storm allowed solar particles to interact with Earth’s magnetic field, making the lights visible much farther south than usual—giving locals a rare chance to see the stunning phenomenon.

People were encouraged to aim their devices at the sky, as cameras can often capture auroras more vividly than what’s visible to the naked eye.
