NEW: City Council Planning to Approve City Purchase of Historic Bank Building for Police Headquarters

Over the past few years, there has been constant chatter about the condition of the current public safety building. The current building, located at 8th & Central, is an old school building with over $35M+ needed in repairs.

Today, in an effort to reduce spending and expand their presence, the city is discussing a $12M+ acquisition of 801 Asbury Avenue, placing them directly in the busy downtown district. City Council will formally vote on authorizing the purchase at the September 25th meeting.

QUICK FACTS:

  • 801 Asbury Avenue is owned by Eclat Investments. There are 20+ independent businesses that lease space inside.

  • The former bank building is dated back to 1925.

  • In the past, Mayor Jay Gillian proposed a $42M+ new building, but was quickly turned down.

The city has already made acquisitions behind the building to expand parking, and council continues to discuss changes to increase parking.
