Last month, The OCNJ Current reported that City Council Member Keith Hartzell was preparing to launch a campaign to challenge Mayor Jay Gillian in the upcoming 2026 Ocean City, NJ Mayoral Election. Yesterday, Hartzell formally declared his candidacy, submitting his petition and announcing his candidacy on social media.
On Wednesday, Keith Hartzell announced his candidacy on social media with a video address. Hartzell’s campaign will be focused on issues regarding fiscal responsibility, preservation, and smart development.

Keith Hartzell’s record of public service in Ocean City spans more than two decades. He has served 22 years on City Council, previously held the role of President of Main Street Ocean City.
Election Day is on May 12, 2026, and challengers have until February 26th to file petitions to appear on ballot. Jay Gillian & Keith Hartzell both submitted petitions on February 25th.
